What being close buys you is availability rather than a discount: the seven miles nearest me are where a same-day slot is realistic when the diary allows, and Radcliffe is inside them.
What I actually get called to in Radcliffe
Recent Radcliffe jobs on my system lean towards water rather than gas: a shower and its wall boards stripped out and rebuilt, a leak coming through a lounge ceiling that turned out not to be a pipe at all, boiler servicing with the certificate emailed before I left, and landlord gas safety records.
That is a different mix from the Farnworth and Kearsley side of my area, where it is mostly boilers and radiators. It is worth saying because a lot of firms who fit boilers do not really want the bathroom work, and a leak that is soaking a ceiling does not care which one you would rather have.

A ceiling leak that is not a pipe
One Radcliffe call was water coming through into the lounge. Everyone assumes a burst pipe upstairs. It was the bath — the seal had gone and water was running down the outside of it every time the shower was used. A bead around the bath, sealed properly, panel refitted, done. Chasing a leak to the actual source is cheaper than replacing pipework that was never leaking.
What goes behind the wall boards
Stripping a shower out is the easy half. What decides whether it lasts is what goes on the wall behind — cement board rather than plasterboard where it is going to get wet, fixed properly before a single panel goes up. You never see it again, and it is the part I will not shortcut.
Keeping what is still good
On that same Radcliffe bathroom the shower screen was perfectly sound, so it came off, went back on, and the customer paid for a new shower rather than a new everything. If a part of your bathroom has years left in it I will say so, even though the bigger job would pay me more.

Flat, whatever the make. A gas fire service is the same. Add a gas safety record for £150 all in — that is the boiler on the certificate, and £10 for each other gas appliance added to it.
New boiler from £1,799 fitted
A like-for-like combi swap, system flush and magnetic filter included. Moving the boiler, changing system type or coming off a back boiler is priced above it, after a look.
Everything else
Gas safety record on its own £99 for the first appliance, £10 each extra. Leak detection and trace £180, covering travel and the first 90 minutes, with a written report for an insurer at £60. Cancellation or missed appointment £66.
Fixed-price bookings made online — the £105 service and the £132 call-out — take the full amount at the time of booking, and that payment is the whole price for the visit. Quoted work such as a boiler install or a bathroom takes 50% at booking with the balance on completion.
How a Radcliffe job runs
