Losing your heat or hot water is never convenient. Here is exactly what it costs.
Gas boiler repair in Bolton by a Gas Safe registered engineer — and the same visit covers gas fires, hot water cylinders and gas water heaters. One figure covers the call-out, the travel and the first hour and a half. After that you are charged for the time actually taken — and nothing else changes.

The questions people ask
What does it cost to get you out?
£132 including VAT. That covers the call-out, the travel and the first hour and a half — which is where most straightforward repairs finish. And if it takes longer?
£45 including VAT for each further half hour, or part of one. You are charged for the time actually taken, and there is no point at which the charging changes. What about parts?
Parts are never quoted before the fault is confirmed — the same symptom can mean a £15 part or a £200 one. Once it is diagnosed you get the cost before anything is fitted.Who turns up?
Chris. The same person who took the call. You are not handed to whichever engineer happens to be free. You are told what the call-out costs before I set off, and what the part costs before it goes in.
No diagnostic fee bolted on afterwards, and no clock that quietly starts before I arrive.
Book a repair
Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. Tell me the make of your boiler and what it is doing, and you will know the call-out charge before anyone sets off.Water coming in as well? Emergency plumbing tells you what to do while you wait.
How long repairs usually take
Straightforward
A reset, a small accessible part, a repressurise. Up to an hour and a half. £132Moderate
An accessible pump or valve, or minor PCB access. Two to two and a half hours. £177 to £222 including VATComplex
Multiple components, or harder access. Three to four hours. £267 to £357 including VATParts, and what is guaranteed
I will not quote a part before I have confirmed the fault — the same symptom can mean a £15 part or a £200 one. Once diagnosed I tell you what it costs before fitting it. My workmanship is guaranteed for 24 months from the day I do the work — that covers the repair itself, how it was carried out. Any new part carries the manufacturer’s own warranty, which runs alongside mine from the same day rather than after it. What I cannot promise is a first-time fix on a system with more than one fault. Every job is logged, so if it recurs I pick up where I left off.How a repair actually goes
- I ask what it is doing before I set off. Fault code, noise, pressure, when it started, what changed. A lot of the diagnosis happens on the phone, and it decides what comes on the van.
- I test in order rather than swapping parts. Gas pressure and tightness, combustion readings on the analyser, system pressure, the expansion vessel, the electrics. Readings get recorded, not remembered.
- You get the fault, the fix and the figure before anything is fitted. Including the honest version where the sensible answer is a new appliance rather than a third repair.
- The visit is logged with photographs. Against your address, so if it recurs I pick up where I left off instead of starting again.
Who does the work, and what I am assessed to do
Every visit is made by me. Gas Safe registered under 917962, a member of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering under 129130, WaterSafe approved for work on drinking water supplies, and City & Guilds trained, with over fifteen years in the trade. A repair means opening a working gas appliance and putting it back safe. Competence is assessed category by category under the Accredited Certification Scheme and reassessed every five years. The ones behind a breakdown call are:CCN1
Core Domestic Gas Safety. Tightness testing, ventilation, flueing and the emergency procedures that decide whether an appliance can be left working at all.CENWAT
Central Heating Boilers & Water Heaters. The category your boiler falls under — installation, service and repair.CPA1
Combustion Performance Analysis. The analyser reading that proves the repair worked, rather than an opinion that it sounds better.TPCP1A
Testing and purging of pipework. What is needed when a repair means breaking into the gas carcass and recommissioning it afterwards.Further information
If it is due its annual service anyway, boiler servicing is £105 including VAT and often cheaper than the two visits separately. If the fault is in the system rather than the appliance — cold radiators, dropping pressure, noisy pipes — that is heating system maintenance. If the boiler is beyond economic repair, new boiler installation sets out what a replacement involves. And if what you actually want to know is when I am turning up, you get a text when I set off and a live map link on the way — how I work explains that, and what goes on the job record while I am there. CMG’s terms set out the guarantee in full: 24 months on my workmanship, running from the day the work is done, alongside the manufacturer’s own guarantee on any part rather than after it.Ready when you are
