Heating and plumbing in Westhoughton

I am Chris Greenhalgh — Gas Safe and CIPHE registered, based in Tonge Fold, on the other side of Bolton from Westhoughton, and the man who will actually turn up at your door.

The far side of Bolton from me, and priced exactly the same.

Gas Safe registered, working on Westhoughton boilers, unvented cylinders and plumbing myself — no call centre, and nobody else turning up in my name.

Westhoughton is the one town on my list I will not promise same-day for

I cover about twenty miles around BL2 2TA, but I only claim same-day availability inside seven of them. Westhoughton is 7.3 miles away and twenty-six minutes on a good run, because it is the far side of Bolton and the route goes round rather than through. That puts it just outside the line, so I book Westhoughton work in properly rather than squeezing it between two jobs and turning up late.

The price does not change and the work does not change. What changes is that I will give you a date rather than a maybe. If that is not fast enough for what has happened, say so on the phone and I will tell you straight whether I am the right person today.

Where I cover around Westhoughton

The BL5 postcodes — Westhoughton town centre, Daisy Hill, Chew Moor, Wingates, Four Gates, White Horse, Hart Common and Over Hulton.

There is one flat call-out charge across the whole 20-mile area, so being on the far side of Bolton costs you nothing extra. Travel is already inside the £132 and there are no distance bands. Being further out buys you a booked date instead of a same-day slot, and that is the only difference.

What I actually get called to in Westhoughton

Recent BL5 jobs on my system include a boiler and unvented cylinder serviced together, a flue top plate replaced with the flue dismantled and rebuilt to do it, two running toilets isolated, stripped and repaired in one visit, a radiator supplied and fitted, a toilet and the flooring around it renewed, annual boiler servicing, and a gas supply capped off and certificated on a commercial job.

Several of those are the same houses year after year, which is the part I would rather you knew than a page full of adjectives.

Three things Westhoughton calls me out for

A lot of BL5 is newer than the terraced side of Bolton — post-war and modern estates out towards Wingates, Chew Moor and Over Hulton — and that shows in the systems. Three jobs keep coming back.

Unvented cylinders, and the check most people skip

Plenty of the larger Westhoughton houses run an unvented cylinder rather than a combi. It is a pressurised vessel with safety valves on it, it needs a separate ticket to work on — my Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems certificate, in compliance with G3 — and it needs checking annually alongside the boiler. Most people have never had that done. I service the boiler and the cylinder on the same visit, and you get the record for both.

The flue, not just the boiler

One BL5 job needed a top plate on the flue replacing, which meant dismantling the flue and rebuilding it rather than swapping a part on the front of the boiler. Flue faults are the ones that turn a working boiler into an unsafe one, and they are the reason a service is a strip-down rather than a look and a sticker.

Finishing it in the visit, because I am not nipping back

Two toilets running at once in one Westhoughton house: isolated, drained, parts picked up from a local merchant mid-job, both repaired and tested before I left. When a town is twenty-six minutes away rather than nine, coming back tomorrow is not a small thing, so I would rather go and get the part than book a second visit.

What it costs

Every figure below is the same in Westhoughton as it is on my own street.

Call-out £132

Covers travel and the first 90 minutes on site. Each further half hour is £45. Parts are quoted and agreed after I have diagnosed the fault, never before.

Boiler service £105

Flat, whatever the make. A gas fire service is the same. Add a gas safety record for £150 all in — that is the boiler on the certificate, and £10 for each other gas appliance added to it.

New boiler from £1,799 fitted

A like-for-like combi swap, system flush and magnetic filter included. Moving the boiler, changing system type or working with an unvented cylinder is priced above it, after a look.

Everything else

Gas safety record on its own £99 for the first appliance, £10 each extra. Leak detection and trace £180, covering travel and the first 90 minutes, with a written report for an insurer at £60. Cancellation or missed appointment £66.

Fixed-price bookings made online — the £105 service and the £132 call-out — take the full amount at the time of booking, and that payment is the whole price for the visit. Quoted work such as a boiler install or a bathroom takes 50% at booking with the balance on completion.

How a Westhoughton job runs

  1. You book a real slot, not a callback. The online form takes the date and the payment, so the job is in my diary rather than on a list I get back to.
  2. You get a text with an ETA and a live tracking link when I set off. Twenty-six minutes across Bolton, so you get the tracking link rather than a four-hour window.
  3. The certificate is completed on site and emailed before I leave, and the appliance is registered with the manufacturer on your behalf.
  4. I remind you at about eleven months, so the next service does not creep up on you.

Same engineer, same price, whichever side of Bolton you are on.

You deal with me from the first message to the certificate. That is the whole business, and it is why the work is backed by a 24-month workmanship guarantee on heating, gas and plumbing.

Common questions

Can you get to Westhoughton today?

Usually not, and I would rather say so. It is twenty-six minutes across Bolton, which puts it outside the seven miles where I claim same-day. I will give you the earliest honest date instead, and if it is an emergency I will tell you on the phone whether I am the right person today.

Does it cost more because I am further out?

No. One flat £132 call-out across the whole 20-mile area, travel included. No distance bands and no per-mile charge — being the far side of Bolton costs you nothing.

My house has an unvented cylinder — can you work on it?

Yes. It needs a separate ticket beyond Gas Safe and I hold it — the Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems certificate, in compliance with G3 of the Building Regulations. Servicing the cylinder alongside the boiler is the sensible way to do it, and it is the check most houses have never had.

Do you do landlord gas safety certificates in Westhoughton?

Yes. £99 for the first appliance and £10 for each extra on the same certificate, or £150 with a boiler service included. The record is completed on site and emailed the same day.
