If you can smell gas, stop reading and do this instead
Do not touch any switches and do not use a naked flame. Open the doors and windows, get everyone out, and ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
Ring them first, not me. They are free, they are open all day and all night, and they will make it safe. I can put it right afterwards.
Do this now
- Turn the water off at the stop tap. Usually under the kitchen sink, or where the main pipe comes into the house. Turn it clockwise. If you cannot reach it safely, leave it.
- If water is anywhere near electrics, kill the power at the consumer unit before you go near it.
- Open the cold taps downstairs. It drains what is left in the pipes and takes the pressure off the leak while you wait.

Book online and pick a time, or ring instead if you would rather. Either way you deal with Chris, not a call centre, and you get a straight answer about whether I can reach you and when.
Bookings Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. Emergency call-outs outside those hours where I can.
What it costs, before you ring
The call-out
£132 including VAT anywhere within 20 miles of BL2 2TA. That covers the travel and the first hour and a half on site — it is not an appearance fee on top of the work.
After the first 90 minutes
£45 including VAT for each further half hour, or part of one. The quicker it is sorted, the less it costs you.
Anywhere in the area
One price, no distance surcharge. The call-out is the same whether you are five minutes away or twenty miles out. Beyond 20 miles is outside the area I cover — ask, and I will tell you straight away.
Parts
Never quoted before the fault is confirmed, and never fitted before you have agreed the cost. Materials are charged at cost plus 22.5%.
Every unavoidable charge is on the table before I leave the yard.
Call-out, distance, parking, materials. Nobody wants a surprise on the invoice least of all on a day that started with water coming through the ceiling.
What I can deal with
Burst and split pipes, leaking joints, tank and cylinder overflows, a toilet or washing machine that has flooded, no water at all, and leaks that have started coming through a ceiling. Also the ones that are not dramatic but will not wait — a stop tap that has seized, a leak you can hear but cannot find.

If it cannot be finished today
The first job is always to make it safe and stop the water. If the repair needs a part that is not on the van, you get told what it is, what it costs and when it can be done — and the house is left watertight in the meantime.
Every attendance is logged with photographs, so if it turns into an insurance claim you have a record from a Gas Safe registered, WaterSafe approved engineer rather than a scribbled receipt.
Who does the work, and what I am assessed to do
Every visit is made by me. Gas Safe registered under 917962, a member of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering under 129130, WaterSafe approved for work on drinking water supplies, and City & Guilds trained, with over fifteen years in the trade.
An emergency is the worst time to find out somebody is not qualified for what they have just opened up. What sits behind the van on a call-out:
Water Regulations
NICEIC assessed against the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, which is what governs any work on a drinking water supply — and why I am on the WaterSafe register.
Unvented cylinders
NICEIC assessed in Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems, in compliance with G3 of Approved Document G. A pressurised cylinder discharging is not a job to hand to somebody without it.
CCN1
Core Domestic Gas Safety. If the emergency turns out to be gas, the same visit can make it safe rather than waiting for a second engineer.
CPA1
Combustion Performance Analysis. Proof that anything gas-fired I have touched is left burning correctly, on an analyser reading rather than an opinion.
Also held on the gas side: TPCP1A for testing and purging pipework, so if a loss of pressure turns out to be on a gas line rather than a water one, it is still the same visit and the same engineer.
Away from gas, assessed by NICEIC in December 2024: Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems, installation and servicing, in compliance with G3 of Approved Document G; the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999; energy efficiency for domestic heating and hot water systems; solar thermal hot water; and air source heat pumps. Behind all of that sit a BTEC National Diploma in electrical and electronic engineering and City & Guilds electrical installation training — useful for understanding controls and wiring centres, though I am not an electrical contractor and do not present myself as one.
None of it is a badge you buy. Gas Safe registration is renewed annually and the gas work I notify can be inspected. CIPHE members are vetted before joining, have to keep their skills current, and answer to an independent complaints panel. Every number here is checkable on somebody else’s website rather than mine — the credentials page tells you where.
Further information
If the leak is hidden and you cannot find where the water is coming from, leak detection traces it before anything gets lifted. If the boiler is the problem rather than the plumbing, boiler repairs sets out the call-out and the labour bands.
