Heating and plumbing in Astley Bridge
I am Chris Greenhalgh — Gas Safe and CIPHE registered, based in Tonge Fold, about three miles across town from Astley Bridge, and the man who will actually turn up at your door.
Three miles across town, and priced the same as my own street.
Gas Safe registered, working on Astley Bridge boilers, cylinders and bathrooms myself — no call centre, and nobody else turning up in my name.
£132 call-out, includes the first 90 minutes, inc VATInside the same-day area
Same day is a seven-mile promise, and Astley Bridge is well inside it
I cover about twenty miles around BL2 2TA but only claim same-day availability inside seven of them. Astley Bridge is about three miles away, straight up Blackburn Road. I would rather tell you where that line is than let you find it on the day you need me.
If it is genuinely an emergency and I am already on a job the other side of Bolton, I will say so on the phone rather than keep you waiting. There is no call centre between you and that answer.
Where I cover around Astley Bridge
The BL1 6 and BL1 7 postcodes — the streets off Blackburn Road and Belmont Road, Seymour Road, Thorns Road, the Crompton Way end, and on up through Sharples towards Eagley and Dunscar.
There is one flat call-out charge across the whole 20-mile area, so being at the north end of town costs you nothing extra. The only thing distance changes is how quickly I can be there, not the bill.
What I actually get called to in Astley Bridge
Astley Bridge is not one kind of house, and that is the thing worth knowing before anyone quotes you. It grew up in the second half of the 1800s as Lower Sharples, around the bridge over Astley Brook, so the older core is stone terraces on and behind the main road. Then it kept going — interwar and post-war semis, and the larger houses that climb north towards Sharples and Belmont Road.
That mix matters because the right answer in a stone terrace on Blackburn Road is often the wrong answer half a mile up the hill. One has solid walls, a tight flue route and a combi; the other has a cylinder, an airing cupboard and room to think about a heat pump.
Three things Astley Bridge calls me out for
The ground rises as you go north out of town, the houses get bigger, and the systems change with them. Three jobs come round again and again.
Solid stone walls, and what that does to a quote
The Victorian terraces here are stone, built before cavity walls, so there is nothing to fill and the heat loss is what it is. That is not a reason to do nothing — it is a reason to size the radiators and the boiler off the actual house rather than off a rule of thumb. If somebody quotes you a boiler without asking what the walls are, they are guessing.
Cylinders, not combis, once you get up the hill
The bigger houses towards Sharples and Belmont Road tend to have a hot water cylinder rather than a combi, and often an unvented one. Servicing an unvented cylinder needs a separate ticket beyond Gas Safe — the Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems certificate, under G3 of the Building Regulations. I hold it, and it is worth asking anyone who touches yours whether they do.
Coming off an old system, without pretending it is like-for-like
Plenty of the semis still have a regular system, or the scar of a back boiler, and swapping to a combi is a bigger job than a straight change. Pipework, flue route and where the boiler ends up all move. I would rather price that honestly after a look than give you a headline figure that changes on the day.
What it costs
Every figure below is the same in Astley Bridge as it is on my own street. Heat pumps and bathrooms are quoted after a survey rather than off a price list.
Call-out £132
Covers travel and the first 90 minutes on site. Each further half hour is £45. Parts are quoted and agreed after I have diagnosed the fault, never before.
Boiler service £105
Flat, whatever the make. A gas fire service is the same. Add a gas safety record for £150 all in — that is the boiler on the certificate, and £10 for each other gas appliance added to it.
New boiler from £1,799 fitted
A like-for-like combi swap, system flush and magnetic filter included. Moving the boiler, changing system type or coming off a back boiler is priced above it, after a look.
Everything else
Gas safety record on its own £99 for the first appliance, £10 each extra. Leak detection and trace £180, covering travel and the first 90 minutes, with a written report for an insurer at £60. Cancellation or missed appointment £66.
Fixed-price bookings made online — the £105 service and the £132 call-out — take the full amount at the time of booking, and that payment is the whole price for the visit. Quoted work such as a boiler install or a bathroom takes 50% at booking with the balance on completion.
How an Astley Bridge job runs
- You book a real slot, not a callback. The online form takes the date and the payment, so the job is in my diary rather than on a list I get back to.
- You get a text with an ETA and a live tracking link when I set off. Three miles up Blackburn Road means that window is usually short.
- The certificate is completed on site and emailed before I leave, and the appliance is registered with the manufacturer on your behalf.
- I remind you at about eleven months, so the next service does not creep up on you.
Same engineer, same price, whichever side of Bolton you are on.
You deal with me from the first message to the certificate. That is the whole business, and it is why the work is backed by a 24-month workmanship guarantee on heating, gas and plumbing.
Common questions
How quickly can you get to Astley Bridge?
About three miles, so it is inside the area where same-day is realistic when there is a slot. I will give you an honest date rather than promise a time I cannot keep.
My house is stone with no cavity. Is a heat pump a waste of time?
Not automatically, but it is a survey question rather than a phone question. It comes down to what the heat loss actually is, whether the radiators can run at a lower temperature, and where the cylinder would go. If the house is not ready, I will tell you that instead of selling you one.
Do you service unvented cylinders?
Yes. It needs a separate ticket beyond Gas Safe and I hold it — the Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems certificate, in compliance with G3 of the Building Regulations. It is worth checking that whoever works on yours has it.
Do you work alongside builders on bigger projects?
Yes, regularly. Bathrooms and refurbishments get quoted in days with materials invoiced separately at cost, so you can see exactly what the work costs and exactly what the parts cost.
If you are in Astley Bridge and want a straight answer on a boiler, a cylinder or a bathroom, the price is on the page and the diary is open.
