Heating and plumbing in Darcy Lever

I am Chris Greenhalgh — Gas Safe and CIPHE registered, based in Tonge Fold, a mile and a half from Darcy Lever, and the man who will actually turn up at your door.

Five minutes down Long Lane, and priced the same as my own street.

Gas Safe registered and WaterSafe approved, working on Darcy Lever boilers, water mains, waste pipework and plumbing myself — no call centre, and nobody else turning up in my name.

Same day is a seven-mile promise, and Darcy Lever is well inside it

I cover about twenty miles around BL2 2TA but only claim same-day availability inside seven of them. Darcy Lever is 1.4 miles away — five minutes down Long Lane. I would rather tell you where that line is than let you find it on the day you need me.

If it is genuinely an emergency and I am already on a job the other side of Bolton, I will say so on the phone rather than keep you waiting. There is no call centre between you and that answer.

Where I cover around Darcy Lever

The BL3 1 end of Bolton — Darcy Lever village, Laurel Avenue, Sidford Close, Radcliffe Road and the streets running down to the Croal — plus the Little Lever and Great Lever edges either side.

There is one flat call-out charge across the whole 20-mile area, so Darcy Lever is not priced differently from anywhere else and travel is already inside it. What being this close buys you is availability rather than a discount: at five minutes, a same-day slot is realistic whenever the diary allows.

What I actually get called to in Darcy Lever

Recent Darcy Lever jobs on my system include a Worcester heat-only boiler installation with a telescopic flue, system flush and inhibitor, a second boiler installation two doors down the same avenue, waste pipework that kept pulling apart refitted with new clips, a leaking toilet and thermostatic valve sorted alongside a smart thermostat, boiler servicing with an unvented cylinder check, and a quote for a new water main from the front garden into the house.

Three separate households on one avenue is not a coincidence — it is what happens when neighbours watch a job get done properly and then ask for the same.

Three things Darcy Lever calls me out for

Darcy Lever is a mix of older terraces near the village and post-war semis on the avenues, and a fair number of them are still on a stored hot water system rather than a combi. Three jobs keep coming back.

Heat-only boilers, and why swapping to a combi is not automatic

One Darcy Lever install was a Worcester heat-only unit — a straight, properly done replacement rather than a conversion. If the house has a cylinder, decent airing cupboard space and more than one bathroom, ripping it out for a combi can make the hot water worse rather than better. I would rather fit the right one twice than the fashionable one once.

Waste pipes that quietly pull apart

A Darcy Lever call was pipework that kept coming apart at the joints. Push-fit waste is a good system and it creeps if it is not clipped properly — the pipe expands with hot water, works loose over months, and you get a damp patch nobody can explain. It was refitted with the right soil and push-fit clips. Clips cost pence; a ceiling does not.

A new water main from the boundary

One house here had a mains leak between the front garden and the property and wanted the supply renewed once the trench was open. Underground mains work is a different job from anything inside the house — it involves the supply pipe, the connection, and getting it signed off properly. WaterSafe approval is the part that matters, and it is why I can do it rather than refer it on.

What it costs

Every figure below is the same in Darcy Lever as it is on my own street.

Call-out £132

Covers travel and the first 90 minutes on site. Each further half hour is £45. Parts are quoted and agreed after I have diagnosed the fault, never before.

Boiler service £105

Flat, whatever the make. A gas fire service is the same. Add a gas safety record for £150 all in — that is the boiler on the certificate, and £10 for each other gas appliance added to it.

New boiler from £1,799 fitted

A like-for-like combi swap, system flush and magnetic filter included. Moving the boiler, changing system type or coming off a back boiler is priced above it, after a look.

Everything else

Gas safety record on its own £99 for the first appliance, £10 each extra. Leak detection and trace £180, covering travel and the first 90 minutes, with a written report for an insurer at £60. Cancellation or missed appointment £66.

Fixed-price bookings made online — the £105 service and the £132 call-out — take the full amount at the time of booking, and that payment is the whole price for the visit. Quoted work such as a boiler install or a bathroom takes 50% at booking with the balance on completion.

How a Darcy Lever job runs

  1. You book a real slot, not a callback. The online form takes the date and the payment, so the job is in my diary rather than on a list I get back to.
  2. You get a text with an ETA and a live tracking link when I set off. A mile and a half means that window is usually very short.
  3. The certificate is completed on site and emailed before I leave, and the appliance is registered with the manufacturer on your behalf.
  4. I remind you at about eleven months, so the next service does not creep up on you.

Same engineer, same price, whichever side of Bolton you are on.

You deal with me from the first message to the certificate. That is the whole business, and it is why the work is backed by a 24-month workmanship guarantee on heating, gas and plumbing.

Common questions

How quickly can you get to Darcy Lever?

A mile and a half, five minutes, so it is well inside the area where same-day is realistic when there is a slot. I will give you an honest date rather than promise a time I cannot keep.

Should I swap my cylinder for a combi?

Not automatically. It depends on the number of bathrooms and the mains flow rate, which I measure before recommending either. Plenty of Darcy Lever houses are better served by keeping stored hot water.

Can you replace the water main from the road?

The supply pipe from the boundary into the house, yes — I am WaterSafe approved and it is work I do. The connection at the main itself belongs to the water company, and I will tell you plainly which part is which before anything is dug.

Do you do landlord gas safety certificates in Darcy Lever?

Yes. £99 for the first appliance and £10 for each extra on the same certificate, or £150 with a boiler service included. The record is completed on site and emailed the same day.
